Restoring a Wellington Hospitality Icon

The Wellesley Boutique Hotel is a Wellington icon. Built in 1929 and now a grade 1 listed building in the centre of Wellington CBD. This boutique hotel is well known for its classic charm and traditional sophistication.  It is one of the finest examples of neo-Georgian architecture in Wellington.

Bathroom Restoration Is Possible

Prior to finding Canny Surface Solutions, General Manager of ”the Wellesley” Stephen Edwards was fielding ongoing complaints from customers about the state of their aging bathrooms. These are not the run-off the mill bathrooms but 13 elegant, individually styled rooms sporting beautiful neo-Georgian furnishings and décor. While the hotel is well known for the its charm and luxurious comfort these 30 year old bathrooms, part of each suite, were simply not up to standard.   Stephen says “once that black mould starts to appear I thought it could not be stopped. All our bathrooms were in a very bad way. Until I met Cameron I did not know it would be possible to restore them at all. I remember saying to him that if he came in and did the work he could not have before and after photos as I was so embarrassed.”

For Cameron, this type of work is exactly where his business can make the most impact. The process to restore them is a lot of hard work but by using Clearshield’s proven systems and specialist products. Cameron was always confident that he could do the work which included:

  • Removing the mineral build up and calcium stains on shower walls and floor
  • Removing and replacing mouldy silicone on shower walls and floor
  • Repair the grout channels on walls & floor and prepare for sealing
  • COLOUR SEAL grout channels and CLEAR SEAL tiles. This provides maximum stain resistance and easier ongoing maintenance. Using the microban mould and mildew resistant premium water based sealer ensures that the black mould will not reoccur over time.

Transformed Bathrooms

The whole process not only transformed the bathrooms and returned them to new but also set them up for many years of maintenance free use.

Scheduling the work around the Wellesley’s busy bookings and occupancy was also an important part of the project. The scheduled for all the bathroom was agreed up front and then was adhered to fully throughout the work. The hotel remained open at all times and each bathroom was restored, taking it out of action for only one day. This ensured that the business did not lose revenue or have to turn away bookings

Stephen says “Cameron did exactly what he said he would as per the schedule agreed. There was almost no disruption to the hotel and that bathrooms are beautiful.  I have not had one complaint about a bathroom since and they are now of the same high quality and luxury that our customers expect from their stay with us”
